Why don’t you accept insurance?

There are a number of reasons for why we do not to accept insurance. At the top of the list is protecting our clients. Insurance companies work almost exclusively from the medical model, which assumes illness and pathology. A little known fact among the general public is that for therapists to receive compensation from an insurance carrier, they must “diagnose” a mental disorder.

More importantly is that in addition to requiring the type of services provided, dates/times of services, and diagnosis, insurance companies may require copies of a client’s treatment plan, description of impairment, status of therapy, progress notes, and/or case summaries. We believe that such disclosures are a serious breech of a client’s confidentiality. Moreover, before authorizing additional sessions, a “case manager” (who may have minimal training and experience) will make the determination of whether additional services may be provided, irrespective of the opinion of the licensed mental health professional who is helping the client.

If a client has out of network coverage and wishes to be reimbursed for the services received, we will provide the client with a formal statement of services that can be submitted to the insurance carrier. In such instances we will try to protect the confidentiality of the client to the extent possible, given the policies of the insurance company.
