Individual Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a process by which you examine your thoughts, feelings, actions and relationships. With the assistance of a skilled professional, together you evaluate where problems exist, or where changes are likely to improve your life satisfaction and overall psychological and emotional well-being. You can then learn how to make the changes that are necessary to achieve better quality of life. We have extensive experience treating a wide variety of conditions, however, common problems experienced by persons requiring psychotherapy include:

Bipolar Disorder

Excessive Worrying/Anxiety

Substance Abuse

Couples and Family Therapy/Counseling

Couples and family therapy focuses on addressing problems in relationships that occur between couples, parents and children, siblings, in-laws, grandparents, ex-spouses, extended family members, and friends. The same principles are utilized for relationship problems in the work setting, such as between co-workers, or business associates. Marriage and family therapy usually includes talking with other family members in therapy, and may include performing tasks or homework assigned by the therapist. Common problems experienced by couples and families include:

Problem-Solving Communication

Lack of Affection

Financial Worries

Incompatible Child Rearing Practices

Time Togetherness

Child and Adolescent Therapy

Children may become the focus of therapy for many different reasons. Generally, behavior analysis and management are used to treat a variety of problems in both children and adolescents. Applied behavior analysis is a treatment approach based on the principles of operant conditioning that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement. Principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, social skills training and parenting skills training may be also be provided in the treatment approach. Depending on the reason for seeking treatment, a psychological evaluation may be needed. Common difficulties encountered among children and adolescents include:

Anxiety and Depression

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity (ADHD)

Oppositional Defiant Behaviors

Learning/Academic Difficulties

Self-Image and Self-Esteem

Psychological Evaluations

Through a psychological evaluation a psychologist assesses whether an individual has the symptoms of any specific psychological condition(s). An evaluation uses testing to better understand a person’s personality dynamics and the general psychological adjustment problems being experienced. Identifying specific problems is a necessary step in the development of an effective treatment plan. An evaluation can assist in determining what type of treatment is most likely to be beneficial.
